How To Wear That Pencil Skirt Out On The Town
If you’re like me, then the majority of your closet is work wear! Because I work full-time, I invest the most in refining my office wardrobe. I also just tend to gravitate towards these types of pieces because it best fits my personal style. I’ve never really been a weekend casual kind of girl! Even as a teen, I can remember gazing into the Banana Republic store window and wondering when I’ll be old enough to pull off those styles.
That being said, I’m sometimes at a loss for ideas when it’s time to dress for a weekend activity or evening outing. I do the usual ‘try on a hundred things until one clicks’ method but it’s exhausting! Who else out there does this?
So, I recently came to the realization- a-ha!– why does there
have to be a work-week me and a weekend me? I don’t have the resources
to fund both of these wardrobes, so now it’s time to get a little more
creative by transitioning these pieces from office to weekend. Let’s start with one of the most infamous office staples; the pencil skirt!
have to be a work-week me and a weekend me? I don’t have the resources
to fund both of these wardrobes, so now it’s time to get a little more
creative by transitioning these pieces from office to weekend. Let’s start with one of the most infamous office staples; the pencil skirt!
Here’s my 4 tips on how to wear that pencil skirt out on the town! Whether you follow just one or all four of these tips, you’re bound to get a ton of wear out of your pencil skirts.
1- Leather Jacket or Vest
Let’s face it, a little leather can bring any look straight into the darkness of the night! Whether you go with an edgy moto jacket or a pristine fitted leather coat, you’re sure to bring that look right out of the office category.
2- Bright Colors
Brights have a way of making any piece more fun and less office-like. A bright colored pencil skirt- like my electric blue one- is the perfect way to transition this skirt from day to night.
3- Graphic or Abstract Prints
Whether you choose a printed pencil skirt or printed blouse, the choice is up to you because both work just the same! I find that graphic or abstract prints can give a look a little edge, or at least a little more intrigue than your standard office piece.
4- Edgy Accessories
It’s amazing how accessories and jewelry can really transform a look! Just that extra little bit can make a huge difference. My DIY bow belt and envelope clutch are far from edgy but I did choose long, gunmetal dangle earrings for jewelry. Maybe you don’t have a spiked belt but gunmetal or metallics can toughen up jewelry and other accessories.

This ribbon bow belt was a DIY project I worked on last weekend. I recently have been making ribbon bows for Paisley, my dog, so I figured I could take those skills and apply it to a ribbon bow extension for a belt. By extension, I mean that it’s a separate piece that you can slide onto an existing belt. Because it’s a shiny ribbon, it didn’t photograph very well. It looks better in person, but I’m still deciding whether or not I really like it. I might try again! The best things never come on the first try!
