Style Dare: How To Wear Leggings Appropriately

A few weeks ago, I introduced you all to a new idea- Style Truth or Dare! So, what is this exactly? The best way to describe it is as an interactive game, where you can shape our community here to be exactly what you want! Frustrated we’re not covering a topic you need to know about? Or maybe you just want to learn more about me personally and my style journey? Let us know what you’re looking for by sending us a style truth or dare. Watch the video at the end of this post or click the tab above for all of the details but first, let me show you how it’s done! Here’s our first Style Dare-
I Dare You…
This one’s from Susan of Charming Lucy. Susan asked:
“I am always looking for appropriate ways to style leggings. I would love to see some new fall styles!”
Well Susan, plenty of us have had a tough time styling leggings appropriately! It’s not an easy task, but there’s a few ways to get it right every time. Read on to learn all about it!

WHY IS THIS A CHALLENGE?
Before we can understand how to overcome this challenge, we need to acknowledge why it’s a challenge. Leggings are a tough style because there are more ways to get it wrong than to get it right and typically when you get it wrong, it’s really wrong. This is because they’re skin tight! The biggest challenge here is leaping over the hurdles of the following two questions you may be asking yourself: ‘does this make me look fat’ and ‘are these too revealing.’

THE SOLUTION
Repeat after me- leggings are not pants! This realization makes it a lot easier to get to the solution to this style challenge. We love leggings because they’re comfortable and contrary to popular belief, they can actually be very flattering when styled well. That being said, we need to take a completely different approach than if we were styling a pair of skinny jeans. Here’s what I mean:
1- Think Modesty
There’s really no other way to say it- cover those parts! When choosing a top, it seems to be common belief that it must be a tunic. This isn’t necessarily so! How many tunics do you really have in your closet? I might have one.
A great rule of thumb is to choose a top that at least falls right beneath your behind. This opens up your options tremendously! My favorite go-to’s include a baggy tee or tank and a blouse that’s one or a few sizes too large.
2- Go One Size Up
Because of how fitted leggings are, I find it helpful to go up a size when choosing a pair. There typically isn’t a huge difference between one size and because of the spandex material, they likely won’t be hanging off of you. This will give you just a little bit more room to breathe and makes a big difference when styling them!
THE ART OF FLATTERY
In the section above, I mentioned that leggings can be incredibly flattering when styled well. How is this, you ask? Leggings give you the chance to play with proportions! Maybe you have solid thighs- or in other words, you’re not a stick figure. In that instance, you can really diminish their size by pairing the leggings with a billowy top.

BEHIND THE SCENES: MAKING THE VIDEO
You don’t want to miss the last minute of this video! I started recording and my dog, Paisley, decided that she wasn’t getting enough attention, so she deliberately squeaked her ball right next to the camera. So, I said ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ and invited her to participate in making the video. That’s where all of the fun begins!

Leggings can definitely be tricky, haha. I like to buy super thick + opaque versions so that I'm covered no matter what. Sweater leggings are a girl's best friend!

I agree that leggings can be tough to style since I don't want my butt out on display, but I love how you wore it! The longer shirt works so well, especially belted!
