Where do you look for Halloween costume inspiration? As a twenty-something, the typical pattern is to either grab something from the costume store, put together a super creative and elaborate costume, or imitate something from pop culture, like a favorite TV show character. But what if it was as easy as choosing a classic costume and upping the ante? What happened to being a pumpkin, a witch, or even a skeleton?

In recent years, I’ve really enjoyed choosing a ‘classic Halloween’ costume idea and using fashion to take it to the next level. Last year I was a vampire and the previous year I was a witch, but one of my absolute favorite costumes (ever!) is the flapper costume. It definitely has the best style-potential out of the ‘Halloween classics.’ There’s just something about 1920’s fashion that’s so chic! I love the sequins, fringe, pearls, and everything else that goes along with it.

There are so many ways you can portray a flapper for Halloween, but the absolute best flapper costume I have ever seen was on Pretty Little Liars, worn by Aria Montgomery!

Mandi Line, the
show’s costume designer, styled each of the girls in a movie-inspired costume on the Ghost Train special (episode: 3×13 This is a Dark Ride).
This is one of my favorite episodes because a lot happens and the
costumes were impeccable! Aria Montgomery was Daisy Buchanon from The Great Gatsby and her costume was by far the most detailed, beautiful
flapper costume I have ever seen.

Let’s use Pretty Little Liars as our inspiration! Want to recreate it? Here are 3 fabulous ways to create a vintage flapper costume like Aria’s! Each of these pieces are affordable and can be worn again.

 Look One

I’m not 100% sure if this faux fur vest is true to the 1920’s fashion, but it’s so luxe that I couldn’t resist! Each of the other pieces in this look have a vintage vibe, so I think it works.

 Look Two

With this super blinged out dress and the most authentic detailing, this is sure to be a fabulous costume that will turn heads. What an amazing dress!
With
a flapper costume, the options are endless! All of the necessary
elements are easy to find in stores, so it’s a great DIY costume. I’m
all for costumes that can be re-worn in everyday life but budgets and
versatility aside, the flapper style is so luxe that it
couldn’t possibly be captured by a costume store.
