3 Must-Know Ways To Make Trends Your Own
When you think of military jackets and combat boots, is this the look you envision? Probably not! I know that when I think of the two, I immediately imagine a cargo or camouflage jacket and black lace-up boots. That makes sense, right? That’s the thing about fashion! Much like life, nothing ever is as it seems.
Designers often take existing trends and add their own twist to it, making fashion ever changing and sometimes unpredictable. That leaves us with so many different ways to embrace a trend and stay true to- or recreate- our own style. So, how did I embrace these two unlikely trends while staying true to my style? Here’s 3 Must-Know Ways To Make Trends Your Own!
THROW OUT THE ‘RULE’ BOOK
That’s right, just throw it out and start making your own rules! This is our first step because before we can move forward with such an abstract guide, we must forget our preconceptions and instead think outside of the box.
EMBRACE CONTRAST
A great way to wear a trend that’s not quite your style is to take it and add contrast. What do I mean by this? Let’s say that I want to wear a grunge-style trend, like a cargo jacket, but my personal style is very feminine. That’s quite different, so let’s combine the styles! Create a look that’s feminine to the extreme, like a lace dress and nude pumps, and throw that grunge piece into the mix. The contrast is unexpected and you’ll still look like you!
SHOP BY BRAND OR DESIGNER
What typically happens when a trend hits the mainstream is designers take that style and make it their own. Every designer has an aesthetic and they’re not going to sell their soul by changing that for one little trend! So, why should you? Stick with your favorites to stay true to your own style.
Take this military jacket for instance. I had the toughest time finding what I was looking for! I wanted a classic piece with fine detailing and a luxe vibe, so who did I turn to? Ralph Lauren, of course! Their Denim & Supply line has THE BEST, most intricate military jackets.
CONSIDER COLOR & DETAILS
Color and details make the piece what it is. These are two very important elements when it comes to fashion and style! When I say details, I mean everything from embellishments to fabric and stitching. A grunge style piece may have distressed fabric and come in natural colors like greys and browns. On the contrary, a luxe style would have a lot of detailing, larger accents, and thicker fabric. Luxe colors include navy and gold, like my military jacket.

BEHIND THE SCENES
The weather was perfect this day; nice and cloudy! I’m the type of person that loves the sunshine but on a day when I’m doing a shoot, clouds are my friends. Because of my luck with the weather, I was able to get these shots in quickly and right before a group of screaming kids showed up. I love kids but these ones were literally screaming their heads off. Eek!

I'm not typically that big into trends, but I try to add them in small amounts to the things I already like to wear. I feel like I'm always more comfortable using an accessory that trendy over a piece of clothing.
