Fashion can be influenced by anything that surrounds us; blogs and street fashion, nature, art, and even architecture. One of the largest influences in our American culture is the media. Celebrities, television, and movies largely affect our style and how we perceive many other things, too. A huge culture phenomenon from 2007 – 2012 was the television series Gossip Girl. This show is one of my favorite television series ever and I’m certainly not alone in this. The show stylists, or costume designers, were extremely talented and let’s face it- those beautiful actors can pull off any look! The show attracted fashionistas from all walks of life and has inspired countless styles and trends, namely prep school uniforms.

Throughout the entire series, young men and women are filmed wearing prep school uniforms as a good portion of the show is set at a New York City preparatory high school. In the final episode, Blair Waldorf has an idea for a clothing line based on the school uniform. This set-off a domino effect in the real world of the prep school blazer trend. I really love this trend because it’s a sophisticated, yet youthful look.

In the above set, I featured a navy Ralph Lauren prep school inspired blazer. I love the white contrasting piping detail! I paired the blazer with a navy and yellow J.Crew color blocked satin skirt and grey and white J.Crew vertical striped tank. I accessorized with white and navy J.Crew snakeskin-toe ballet flats and straw J.Crew mini-hobo handbag. For jewelry, I chose a multi-colored Banana Republic flower necklace and a navy Banana Republic crystal stretch bracelet.

What’s your favorite media-inspired trend? How would you style it?
