What Is Photorealism?

Photorealism A-line Skirt

Photorealism A-line Skirt by theclosetbychristie featuring high heels

Realistic landscapes, animal faces, garden flowers- nature is rocking the runway in all its realism. Yes, it’s photorealism I’m talking about! I deemed it as a trend to watch back in January (see post: Fashion Meets Art: Photorealism) and since then, the trend has made its way from the runways to local retailers everywhere.  So, what exactly is photorealism? It’s an art term for painting where photographs are used as the inspiration for the piece. It basically ends up looking like a painted photograph. When it comes to fashion, the photograph is literally transferred onto the piece- or at least it appears that way. The most popular images I have seen include a fox or tiger face, palm trees, and florals.
In the above set, I featured a Dolce & Gabbana A-line photorealism skirt. I love this skirt because it has such a realistic appearance; it feels like I’m viewing a beautiful garden through a window! I paired this skirt with a muted coral TOPSHOP collar-detail top and blush Oasis blazer. I really love how all of these colors work so nicely together. The best thing about photorealism is that it often contains many colors, making it a versatile piece to style. I accessorized with muted coral Alice & Olivia pointed-toe heels and a coral Ann Taylor straw geometric-print clutch. For jewelry, I chose a multi-colored jewel statement necklace, a blush and gold honeycomb bangle from Harrods, and blush Charlotte Russe rhinestone bow stud earrings.
Are you embracing the photorealism trend? How would you style it?
