Countdown to LuckyFABB: 5 Tips For Becoming a Networking Star

Networking is one of the most important things you can do to further your career, or get the word out about your blog or brand. There are many ways to network and whether you have 500 contacts or zero, the job is never done! In Sales 101, I learned that the single most effective way of closing a deal is to get in front of the client. This goes for networking, too! In order to build rapport, nonverbal communication is key. Without it -all we are is a name, right?
So, you know that networking is important and that building rapport is best done in person. What’s next? A networking event, of course! Even for a natural extrovert, it can be pretty intimidating walking into a room full of people you don’t know. Whether you’re attending a large conference like LuckyFABB, or a small soiree, there are many things you can do to prepare yourself for making the most of your time.
Are your nerves building up just reading about this? Here’s a few tips to lighten your spirits!
1- Plan a Meet-Up: Find out who else is attending in advance! Reach out to a few people via email or social networking and plan to meet-up before or during the event. Knowing at least one person will help ease you out of your shell. They may be relieved to have you at their side, too!
2- Use a Pick-Up Line: You heard me right! A great way to welcome yourself into a conversation is by using a pick-up line. Invite yourself into a conversation by saying ‘I couldn’t help but overhear you talking about Banana Republic. That’s one of my favorite stores!’ or ‘Oh, I love shoes! What’s your favorite style?’ The conversation will flow from there.
3- Ask a Question: This is the easiest way to start a conversation! If you see someone standing alone, ask them something. ‘Do you know who the first speaker is?’ or ‘Have you attended this conference before?’ are both great examples. If you want to challenge yourself, ask a more personal question like ‘how long have you been blogging?’ People love to talk about themselves!
4- Flatter Someone: People love to receive compliments! Try flattering someone to spark a conversation. ‘Wow, I love that bracelet!’ or ‘That red dress looks amazing on you!’ will make any woman feel warm and fuzzy.
5- Open Yourself Up: Watch your nonverbals! The biggest mistake you can make is to stand in the corner with your arms crossed. That tells others you’re not interested in talking. Open yourself up by wearing a pleasant facial expression, posing in a confident stance, and staying off the walls. Someone just may approach you!

Hi Jewel! Thanks for reading my post! I was nervous about attending FABB alone, too! That's what sparked the idea for the post. I figured if I was nervous, there must be others that are too! I find it therapeutic to give advice; it helps me keep myself in check!
Hope you had as much fun as I did!
