The Guide To Necklace Lengths & Layering + Link-Up
Layering delicate jewelry is such a fabulous accessory trend that is so current. While I don’t think I’ll ever set my statement necklaces aside, playing around with delicate necklaces has been so much fun lately! I first saw this trend on a segment of a morning show well before the start of the summer, but I found it kind of tricky to implement. There’s a real art to choosing what necklaces to pair together and what lengths complement each other! Most necklaces are adjustable but even with this feature, not all necklaces go together as I have found out through much trial and error. So after some practice and Pinterest browsing, I’m here to make things easier for you by taking out the guesswork.
Here’s my… ‘Guide To Necklace Lengths & Layering!‘
After reviewing several resources, I put together my own reference guide for you! This french mannequin graphic depicts that there are many different necklace lengths ranging from 14″ to 33″. While no one expects your neck to look like this mannequin’s, this is a great reference guide to help you with deciding what necklaces to pair together.
You can measure your current necklaces with a tape measure if you’re unsure of the lengths, but most newly purchased necklaces will say the length on the tags.
You might say ‘ok, what does length have to do with layering?’ These two go hand in hand! It’s the same as with elementary math, whereas you can’t possibly learn long division without first knowing the basics of division. You can’t learn how to write without first knowing the alphabet. The same applies here in fashion! There must be an understanding of length and the different types of necklaces before efficient layering is possible.
Now that we have a better understanding of the necklace lengths, let’s move onto the fun stuff; layering! While I wish I could write a really clear, concise ‘do this, not that’ guide, this trend isn’t so cut and dry. You’ll really need to use your own judgment and design aesthetics because every necklace- even delicate ones- have different pendants. Some pendants may be longer or larger than others, so the lengths that complement each other can vary based upon the necklace.
That being said, here’s a good starting point!
Best Lengths & Combinations
A length combination I have found to be the most versatile- and one you can turn to in almost any case- is a 16″ necklace with a 20″ necklace. This will leave enough space for almost any pendant size.
Minimalism
For a more minimalistic look, trying pairing 2 or 3 tiny pendants. Because of the tiny pendants, you don’t need as much space between the necklaces. The best lengths for this type of look is:
2 Necklaces: 16″ and 18″
3 Necklaces: 16″, 18″, and 20″
Somewhere In Between
For a little more pizzazz- but without being the bling queen- try pairing a tiny pendant with a longer pendant. A good example is what I’m wearing in this look. I chose a circle for my smaller pendant and a chevron design for the longer pendant. While there’s a little more to the chevron design, the detailing is still delicate. The best lengths for this type of look is:
2 Necklaces: 16″ and 20″
3 Necklaces: 16″, 18″, and 24″
Luxe
So you’re a bling queen by nature but you want to try out this trend. There’s an option for you, too! Try pairing 2 delicate necklaces with 1 very long necklace. You can apply the same pendant size combinations as above but add in a longer necklace. The long necklace can have a very thin chain with a stone pendant or even a thicker chain like the long tassel necklaces we’ve been seeing everywhere.
3rd Necklace: either 30″ or 33″
Rules of Thumb
Whichever style you choose, it’s a good rule of thumb to go with a small pendant for the 1st necklace. The 2nd and 3rd necklace can both have longer or more detailed pendants- just make sure you space them out enough.

to wear the same white pair of Calvin Klein pants every Wednesday for an entire year, styled differently of course! This week Allison is in beautiful Hawaii and finally enjoying some sunshine. Head on over to her blog and follow along.
