4 Fall Essentials & How To Wear Them
As we go into new seasons, I always look forward to embracing the new trends and styles. And as much as I despise the cold weather, sometimes fashion is the only thing that gets me through the brutal winters we’ve been having here on the east coast! Thinking about wearing my cute coats gives me something to look forward to! But let’s not jump so far ahead of ourselves, we’ve still got fall and as much as I don’t want to leave the summer behind, the fall season is approaching.
So, what have we got to look forward to this season? Here are my 4 fall essentials and how to wear them!
1- THE BOXY TEE
When I first heard about this fall trend, I thought ‘no way!’ Why on earth would anyone want to wear something boxy? That term has such a negative connotation. Then I found this plaid boxy tee from Old Navy and there was just something about it that I really liked. Maybe it was the plaid? I’m such a prepster at heart and I get particularly into the preppy and collegiate styles for the fall season. Regardless, I’ve found that there’s a lot that can be done with this top. Here’s a few ideas:
WEAR IT AS A BASIC
Style it simply and wear that boxy tee as a basic. It’ll definitely give you that ‘fashionably thrown together’ look!
WEAR IT AS A LAYERING PIECE
Boxy tees are fabulous layering pieces! For this look, I layered a cargo jacket over my boxy tee. Through playing around with it, I’ve found that you can successfully layer it over an oxford blouse, beneath a jacket, and with a long pendant or statement necklace.
WEAR IT DRESSED UP
Probably what sold me on this particular boxy tee was that Old Navy depicted it tucked into a black midi skirt. You all know how much I love my midi skirts! I always say you can tuck just about anything into a midi skirt and look fabulous. This trend is no exception!
2- THE CARGO JACKET
I’ve had my eye on a few cargo jackets this season! There are so many options out there, but I had a tough time finding just the right one at a good price point. Heidi from Wishes & Reality recently styled this Old Navy cargo jacket fabulously and I knew this was the one! I got it during a sale, so it was inexpensive and the quality is great. The fabric has just enough weight to it so it can transition well through the seasons!
NOT YOUR STYLE? USE IT TO ADD CONTRAST!
This is one of my favorite ways to wear a cargo jacket, especially because it’s really not my typical style. If this is also the case for you, this jacket can add a really nice contrast to your look! How is this done? Simply throw it into the mix! Style a look as you usually would, then add the jacket.
The cargo jacket adds contrast to my look because it’s an otherwise preppy look, with the plaid top and loafer-style heels. Another way to wear a cargo jacket in a contrasting way is how Heidi styled hers- and one of my favorite contrasting combinations- cargo and lace! 3- THE BUCKET BAG & SMALL LEATHER BACKPACK
Two of my favorite handbag trends are the bucket bag and the small leather backpack. Here I’ve got both rolled into one! At first I admired this leather backpack trend from afar because I’m not a student. Do I really have a need for a backpack? And do I really want to look younger than I already do? Well, I kept finding instances where I was thinking ‘gee, I could really use that little backpack right about now,’ so I went ahead and got one! It’s where style meets convenience.
4- LOAFER-LIKE POINTED TOE HEELS & FLATS
Last year, classic loafers were all the rage! I’ve also been seeing these around quite a bit this season, but I’m really loving a chic alternative. It’s a leather pointed-toe heel or flat that resembles the loafer style and has a few of the same elements, like tassels. I’ve been seeing these at a few of my favorite higher end retailers- like Kate Spade, Banana Republic, & White House Black Market- and it has such a chic, luxe look!
