The Must-Have Silhouette For Every Body Type

There are a lot of elements that go into creating THE perfect look. When styling yourself or someone else, it’s important to consider things like the color palette, comfort level, affordability, and of course- the silhouette! In my opinion, the most important element is the silhouette because it can determine how flattering the look is. I’m a firm believer that no matter what shape or size your body is, there’s a silhouette out there for you! It’s all about dressing for your body type, not necessarily losing weight to fit a certain mold.
So, what is the must-have silhouette of this season? It’s peplum! This silhouette was huge a few years ago and never really went away but this year, I’m seeing it everywhere. And it’s no wonder why! The peplum silhouette is incredibly flattering for many different body types. Balance is said to be what the human brain finds attractive and beautiful, so that’s really what it’s all about!

Read on to learn all about how the peplum silhouette can flatter your body type!

There’s a lot of different types of peplum tops. I really love this Elle dotted peplum top from Kohl’s for several reasons! It has a classic black and white color palette, a thin bow belt, and longer short sleeves. The sleeves fall somewhere between a classic short sleeve and a 3/4 length sleeve. This makes it unique and I find it more flattering.

Why is the peplum silhouette in your favor? Find your body type below and learn all about it!

Hourglass

If you’ve been blessed with an hourglass shape- this style will maintain or emphasize your existing silhouette. This doesn’t sound like much but it’s important to note because if you’re not wearing the right silhouettes, you can hide your assets and highlight your flaws! A peplum style with a thin belt will maintain your shape, while a thick belt will emphasize it.
Inverted Triangle
If you’re an inverted triangle, that means you have broader shoulders and narrower hips. If this sounds like you, the peplum silhouette is in your favor because it will balance your shape! It will emphasize your waist and create the illusion of hips, which will align well with your shoulders.

Rectangle
If you have a straight, thin shape- that means you’re a rectangle or thin column. A peplum silhouette will create the look of curves by adding a waist. This emphasis will then, in turn, create hips. For an even more favorable look, try to find a top with ruffled or puffed sleeves. That will add balance to your new hips!
Pear
If you have a smaller upper body and carry most of your weight in your hips and thighs, then you’re a pear-shape (like me!). How can the peplum shape help you? It will create the look of a desired hourglass by disguising your hips and showing more balance. Who wouldn’t want that?
Apple
If you carry most of your weight in your midsection- usually a fuller chest- then you’re an apple- shape. Much like the inverted triangle, the peplum silhouette emphasizes the waist and creates hips that balance with the upper body.

BEHIND THE SCENES
My eyes were opened up to the idea of dressing for your body type many years ago when I read the book ‘The Science of Sexy‘ by Bradley Bayou. It really sheds some light on effective styling and breaks down some of society’s misconceptions about thinness and dieting. If you’re looking for a good read, pick this one up! It’s filled with a ton of high-res photos and graphics, so you’ll definitely want to get the physical book instead of an e-book.

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK

Well, it’s that time of year again! New York Fashion Week is upon us and things are getting a little crazy for those in the fashion world. This year, there are more and more shows that will be live streaming online! That really opens up the experience to the rest of the country and those that were unable to attend. Now we all have more opportunities to be in-the-know! I’m lucky that I live here on the East Coast, right outside of the city, so I’ll be out and about at a few events over the course of the next week and a half.
