How many of you have suffered from a mental illness? Maybe you had the fight of your life against an eating disorder or maybe you went through a bout of depression during a tough time. If this is you, the truth is that you’re not alone. 1 in 5 people suffer from a mental illness and if you think about how many people there are in the world, in this country- that’s a lot!
Wear Your Label is all about embracing who you are and eliminating the stigma behind mental illness. Both of the designers, Kayley and Kyle, suffered from mental illnesses and instead of shying away like society expects, they rose above it and created this movement to make a difference. It’s all about using fashion to create these important conversations!
It was an intimate event hosted by
AMCONYC and if the message itself wasn’t powerful enough, the runway show certainly was! The energy was incredible. Each model in the show was what they call a ‘Role Model,’ which is an individual that has a personal connection with a mental illness and is ‘wearing their label.’ Everybody has a story and because of this, the room was filled with people that this cause means a great deal to.
This bracelet I’m wearing was in the gift bag and is from another awesome movement called
Love Is Louder, which supports anyone that is feeling ‘mistreated, misunderstood, or alone.’ It was created by
The Jed Foundation and Brittany Snow and heavily publicized by other celebrities including Demi Lovato, Vanessa Hudgens, Sophia Bush, and Victoria Justice- just to name a few!
A few of the phrases on the tees included:
– Self Care Isn’t Selfish
– Anxious but Courageous
– Clothes Minded
– It’s Ok Not To Be Ok
and my personal favorite from their previous collection…
– Stressed but Well Dressed!
Each of these phrases are thought-provoking, interesting, and so very true! I especially love the last phrase ‘Stressed but Well Dressed’ because it’s saying that despite dealing with a mental health issue, you can still have it all together or at least appear that way. Just because you are dealing with something, doesn’t mean you’re a total basket-case! It’s all about that stigma.
Witnessing any form of artistry is profound, but this show was
especially so because you could feel the heart and passion in the air. When Kayley and Kyle came back on stage at the end, the applause was incredible because of how much it must have meant to them and because of the profound difference they’re making in the world.

POP-UP SHOP
Following the event was a pop-up shop! Who doesn’t love a good pop-up?
Wear Your Label had some merchandise- a selection of graphic tees and support bracelets- available for sale, in addition to some other brand presentations. I didn’t buy anything in this particular moment, but I definitely plan to browse Wear Your Label’s website when they list the new collection.
The bracelets shown here are from their ‘
Bracelet Project.’ It’s a pretty cool initiative that is meant to unite the fighters, survivors, and supporters. Each color represents a different mental illness and they have everything from PTSD to eating disorders and ADHD. These bracelets are amazing because for someone suffering, seeing their loved one wearing it is a constant reminder that someone has their back. It’s also a subtle way for a sufferer to remind themselves of their recovery goals or show their pride for what they have accomplished.

#WHATIWORE
It was such a powerful event and I had so much to say about it for this post, but I wouldn’t be a very good fashion blogger if I didn’t show you what I wore! Here’s a glimpse at my look! Check back here on Wednesday for a separate post with all of the details from this look and how to wear a blanket scarf.
BEHIND THE SCENES
It was raining this day!
*womp, womp* Rain and the city aren’t a great combination, so I went prepared with my Jones New York classic umbrella. But I swear, umbrellas just don’t work in the city! Who else has experience with this? Lucky for me, there was just a light mist when I was traveling to and from this event! As you can see in this photo, my hair was the main casualty because it didn’t quite make it through the night as I hoped it would. It could certainly have been worse, though!
What are your thoughts on Wear Your Label’s new collection? Do you have thoughts about mental health, in general? We want to hear from you- leave a comment below!
